Our story

In late 2021, we became disheartened at the constant stream of misinformation and disinformation being spread at Lakeland school board meetings over a period of many months. We watched as board trustees allowed a small group of individuals to upend every meeting, malign our district and educators, and personally attack other members of our community.

We knew that these voices were not representative of our welcoming and diverse community. But we were stunned when the board refused to stand up for students and educators, and instead tried to placate a fringe minority and duck responsibility for the deteriorating state of affairs in Lakeland. We realized that new leadership was necessary to restore respect, progress and excellence to the district.

With that realization, we made the decision to establish an organization dedicated to supporting school board candidates who are committed to strong, principled leadership and creating a more positive, welcoming and inclusive school community. We were joined by a diverse group of residents who are passionate about advocacy on an array of issues that are important to our schools: equity, special education, reading, field trips, hands on learning, public participation, civic engagement, and more.

We have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received from the Lakeland community and look forward to working together to RISE above and beyond.

Please join us in Moving Lakeland Forward!
